Building the tunnel

Timetable

Construction of the Fehmarnbelt tunnel began in 2020 initially on the Danish side, and in 2021 on the German side. You can find the overall schedule for the project here.

The three construction sites

The construction site at Rødbyhavn

The main construction site for the Fehmarnbelt project, where the tunnel elements are cast and the tunnel workers stay. This is also where the toll station will be built.

The construction site at Puttgarden

A small work harbour and a concrete batching plant will be built at Puttgarden. They will be used for the construction of the tunnel portal.

The blue water construction site

Special dredging vessels will dredge the 18 km tunnel trench and, when it is completed, the tunnel elements will be immersed and joined together.

The tunnel construction creates jobs

The construction of the Fehmarnbelt tunnel will create several thousand jobs on both the construction site itself and through sub-contractors.
