We match ambition with opportunities

My ambition is to create the best conditions for the Fehmarnbelt tunnel. Not only for its construction but also for the environment, the surrounding communities, the authorities – and eventually, for the benefit of the 10 million people who will have new neighbours and new opportunities to work, study, do business and create growth when the tunnel is completed.

My work is concerned with the political and administrative aspects of the Fehmarnbelt fixed link in Germany and this brings us into close contact with the German authorities, NGOs and the tunnel’s future neighbours.

I am from Germany and was previously engaged in the project as a consultant in Berlin, but when I was offered a position in Copenhagen, I jumped at the chance. I have been living in Copenhagen since 2012 and enjoy every day, not least because I work with a fantastic team on a very special project.

Basically, my job is about creating the best conditions for the Fehmarnbelt tunnel. This means that we take account of the ambitions for the building process itself as well as the interests of all stakeholders involved – the surrounding community, the authorities, the environment and nature.

With so much in play, it’s all about matching ambition with opportunities. The various interests have to be factored in and assessed on an ongoing basis so that, in the end, we reach a solution that takes account of the various parties in the best possible way.

The project is not just about building the tunnel. It’s just as much about what the tunnel will mean for a great many people. We are creating a whole new region where 10 million people will have new opportunities for working, studying, doing business and creating growth. For me being part of the Fehmarnbelt project is therefore quite exceptional. Not only because I’m part of building the world’s longest immersed tunnel, but my work is also about creating greater cohesion in Europe.

This makes it a motivating place to work - a place where I’m always challenged professionally because of the complexity of the project. It’s never boring and my role develops as the project progresses, and the organisation and work change.

And then there’s the whole atmosphere in the office: the shared ambition, the great complexity and an organisation under constant development help to create a very special team spirit around the project. We are one team. I’m surrounded by talented colleagues with expert knowledge and dedication – and that is infectious.

The project is not just about building the tunnel. It’s just as much about what the tunnel will mean for a great many people. We are creating a whole new region where 10 million people will have new opportunities for working, studying, doing business and creating growth.
